Just copy the following code in the notepad and save as a .bat extension.
eg- lock.bat,etc

here, d password is kingstoneee.Cut dis n give ur own password..
After saving ,double click on it and u will get a folder by the name 'Locker' where u hav saved dis file.

Disable System Restore

You can gain a lot of drive space by disabling System Restore. (You should already have a backup regimen in place before you do this.) In Vista, right-click My Computer, select Advanced system settings, click the System Protection tab, and uncheck any drives. In XP, right-click My Computer, then under System Tasks, click on "View system information." Click on the System Restore tab and click the box next to "Turn off System Restore on all drives" to disable it.

Configure Windows Update

Windows Update is great, but if it's set on autopilot, it will download updates that require a reboot, then pester you forever to install them, and eventually reboot on its own. Change the Windows Update settings (in the Windows Security section of the Control Panel) to download updates but ask you whether to install them.

Disable Delete Confirmation

You can disable the confirmation that pops up whenever you delete something by right-clicking the Recycle Bin and selecting Properties. Creating the playlist
create a playlist of your favourite songs in Winamp, WMP or any other player. Export the playlist as a M3U playlist. M3U is generally accepted by almost every player.

Triggering the alarm
point to start> programs >accessories > system tools >scheduled tasks
Create a new task and choose program as windows media player or winamp (May work with others too but I haven't tried anything else)
Choose "daily", Enter the time and choose "every day" at next screen.
It would now ask for password (leave blank in case you don't have one)
Right click on the newly created task and check the "run only if logged in" check box. In the properties. Append the path to the playlist you created in the "run" text box. "D:\windows media player\wmplayer.exe" K:\Playlists\smoothies.m3u
It should now look like the text inside quotes is my WMP's path. It may vary for you. The text after WMP's path is the one to the playlist.
Click OK and you're done.

For each item on this list, you can choose "Hide when inactive," "Always hide," or "Always show" options to decide what you'll see and when.

Fit More Icons on Your Desktop

If your screen is so cluttered with Word documents and program shortcuts that you can't see the rolling meadows of your wallpaper, you don't need to move piles of stuff to the Recycling Bin. Just change the amount of space between icons. Right-click on the desktop, select Properties, then click on the Appearance tab, and click the Advanced button. 10 Steps you should do when your Computer Hangs up

You are in the middle of doing your work, suddenly you realized your computer hanged up. But the problem is, you have not saved your work! Don’t panic! There is a solution for that! And you can surely save your file! Here’s how:

1. Click on “ctrl-alt-delete” keys.

The windows task manager will then open, click on all programs that you don’t need and end the task. You will see that all programs on your taskbar will close one by one. If this will resolve the issue! – then save! (tip# 1: if you’re working on an MS Office application, it will automatically save your file in case the programs suddenly shut down — tip# 2: always save your file at least every 2 minutes by just simply clicking on the “diskette icon”— its just one click!)

2. If it did not resolve the issue,

are there some users logged on that computer? If so, go to switch user (for XP) and log off that user, go back to your log on screen and log on again.

The reason the computer hang up is because if there are many open programs and applications, these retains in the memory, if it is too much for the memory to handle, it freezes! Another reason too the computer hang up is because if you are connected to the internet via dial up, and you are running too many applications and opening many websites. So I suggest, if you are multimedia user or a heavy internet user, then you are better off with a higher memory, at least 512Mb of memory.

There are simple ways to avoid computer to freeze or hang up:

4. Delete all internet temporary files

1). Start any application, say Word. Open some large documents.

2). Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to open Windows Task Manager and click Processes tab and sort the list in descending order on Mem Usage. You will notice that WINWORD.EXE will be somewhere at the top, using multiple MBs of memory.

3). Now switch to Word and simply minimize it. (Don't use the Minimize All Windows option of the task bar).

4). Now go back to the Windows Task Manager and see where WINWORD.EXE is listed. Most probably you will not find it at the top. You will typically have to scroll to the bottom of the list to find Word. Now check out the amount of RAM it is using. Surprised? The memory utilization has reduced by a huge amount.

5). Minimize each application that you are currently not working on by clicking on the Minimize button & you can increase the amount of available RAM by a substantial margin. Depending upon the number and type of applications you use together, the difference can be as much as 50 percent of extra RAM.

In any multitasking system, minimizing an application means that it won't be utilized by the user right now. Therefore, the OS automatically makes the application use virtual memory & keeps bare minimum amounts of the code in physical RAM.

How To Build Your Own Computer

To build your own computer – it's a dream many a geek has had. Many have also fulfilled this – and also many non-geeks too. If you have a technically-inclined mind, can follow instruction, are patient, and are in need (or want) of a computer, then why not follow our guide and build your own?
If you don't know what parts are all compatible, or if you're wanting the best “bang for your buck” in the component choices, or even if you're stuck half-way through the build and need a guided response - feel free to post a thread right here in our Help Desk and we'll help you! There are many different uses for a computer system, so make sure you let us know why you want to use it, and a budget, and you'll be bragging to your mates in no time about your self-built system.

A quick note – like there are many different uses for a computer system, there are also many different ways to build a computer system. Die-hard Geeks may wish to debate the order here, but the reality is that this way works. Other ways work also. And, of course, this tutorial was written up to go with some photos that one of our very own Tech Apprentices took when he built his own computer. So you may find that your system looks different from the pictures – for example, you may not have a discrete video card, and you may have two hard drives, and so on. If your system is markedly different from our example here, please feel free to post a thread and we can tell you any differences you need to incorporate into the build. For example, some aftermarket CPU heatsink/fans need a bracket on the underside of the motherboard, so this would need to be installed before the motherboard is fitted in the case.

1. Gather all Components
First things first – we need to ensure we have all the pieces. Here is a list of things you'll need:
Case (and any extra Case Fans)
Power Supply
Motherboard
CPU (Processor) and Heatsink/Fan (and thermal paste, if not included)
RAM (Memory)
Hard Drive
Optical Drive (e.g. DVD Burner)
Video Card (may be integrated into Motherboard)

3. The Build

3. The Build
First, the case. Open both side panels, then install the standoffs that will keep the motherboard off the metal plate.

Ensure you only install to align with the holes on the motherboard

In the picture above you can see where the standoffs are installed. Use a set of pliers to make sure the standoffs are driven in firmly. Once you have installed the standoffs, next install the back panel I/O bracket that came with the motherboard. Usually, you'll find that the case's generic one is incorrect. Pop the old one out, and insert the one that came with the motherboard. Ensure that it is properly installed, as the motherboard will be hard up against it. Now it's time to install the motherboard. Simply position the motherboard in the correct position and slowly lower it down into the case. To ensure the motherboard is rotated the right way, the CPU socket should be toward the top-left of the case. Make sure you position it right on top of the standoffs so you can properly lock it in by driving screws in the holes on the motherboard where the standoffs are positioned. Put the screws in firm – not tight – so the motherboard is fastened securely.

After the motherboard, install the PSU. Slide the unit from inside the case, and sit it up flush against the back of the case. You'll see where you need to install the 4 screws that hold it in tight. Once it's in firmly, put the cables out of the way so you have as much room as possible inside the case (I.e. hang them up and outside the case).

Next, finish preparing the case for the rest of the components. If you are installing any add-on cards (such as a discrete video card), you'll need to remove the metal backing plate aligning with the corresponding installation slot.

Now move onto any case fans that need to be installed. Most cases come with at least one fan pre-installed on the back, such as our example did. We've also added one in front of where the hard drive will be located. Once the hard drive is installed, it's almost impossible to fit a fan in or out of there, so it's important to do this first. Make sure the case fan is facing so that the air is blown into the case over where the hard drive will be installed – this is an intake fan, and the fan on the back is an exhaust fan.

On the front of the case, you'll need to remove the bezel plates to make room for inserting any optical drives and floppy drives. In our example computer, you can see we have one DVD burner, but no floppy drives – so only one plate was removed.

Now there is room for the optical drive to fit, go ahead and install it. The unit should slide in from the front until it is sitting flush with the case. Some cases may have a “screw-less” or “tool-less” design, whereby a bracket needs to be removed to slide the unit in, and then returned into place and clipped into the lock position. This is how the Cooler Master case works in our example. Other cases will simply have holes ready, and you need to align them up and screw in firm.

After the optical drive, install the hard drive in the same manner. The only difference is that the hard drive should slide in to the lower cage from inside the case. Make sure the you insert it the correct way, so that the power and data connectors are facing the back of the case, ready to connect up at a later point. If you are installing a large graphics card (I.e. for a gaming computer), you may want to ensure you put the hard drive in the lower space to make as much room as possible for the graphics card and PSU cables. And – of course – if this build is using multiple graphics cards (SLI or Crossfire), then careful planning is needed prior to fitting the parts.

By now, the inside of the case should be starting to take shape. The motherboard, power supply, optical drive, and hard drive are all installed. Next we'll move on to the components that connect to the motherboard directly.

CPU – in our example, we have used a Socket 775 (Intel E8400) processor and motherboard combination. Other combinations may look different, such as having pins on the processor itself and not on the motherboard. Either way, take extreme caution, as even a slight bend to one of these pins can render the component useless.

Using the lever next to the CPU socket, unhinge it and then open the metal gate surrounding the socket. Most will have a protective cover that needs removing.

Handling the CPU gently by the edges, place the CPU into the socket, ensuring it is aligned the correct way.

Finally, use the lever to lock the metal gate surround into place – you may need to use firm pressure.

After the CPU is installed, fit the CPU heatsink/fan. If you have purchased a retail CPU, most come with thermal paste pre-applied to the heatsink. If this is the case, then you do not need to worry about putting your own paste on. If this is not the case, then you'll need to squeeze a small amount (about the size of a grain of rice) onto the CPU before mounting the heatsink on top.

Once the thermal paste is organised, and the CPU is ready to go, line up the heatsink and sit it in place. (If you are using a 3rd-party heatsink, you will need to follow the instructions provided with it). Press down firmly on the 4 corner clips to properly attach the heatsink to the motherboard, which puts the proper amount of pressure onto the CPU for maximum heat dissipation.

While we're on the CPU, we'll finish off the job by attaching the heatsink/fan power and sensor connector to the motherboard, and the 4-pin CPU power connector from the PSU to the motherboard close to the CPU. (Some newer variants may have an 8-pin power connector - this is for new high-powered CPU and motherboard combinations - consult your motherboard manual for which one you should use).

The RAM sticks are relatively easy to install. If your motherboard supports a dual-channel configuration, then it will most likely have the dual-channel slots already marked as such. In our example, we can see the slots are colour-coded - so install matching pairs of RAM sticks into matching slots. For our example, this means slots 1 and 3 will then be populated.

Once you've sorted out where the sticks are being installed, unlock the slots by moving the end levers outward.

Line the module up (the off-centre notch will ensure it only fits one way) and use steady, firm pressure to push it in. When it is in place, the slots at the end will have "snapped" into each side of the stick, securing it.

Now add any discrete cards for the build – in our example photo, we have one video card to be installed. Be sure to line up each card properly into the installation slot on the motherboard. Push cards in firm to ensure a proper fit.

Now all the physical components should be installed for your system. All that's left to do is connect everything up. SATA data cables (or IDE ribbon cables for components that connect in that way) need to run from the device to the motherboard. Power cables from the PSU need to connect up to each component as necessary.

t is especially important to take care when running the cables from the PSU to each component – always try and get the “mess” minimised as much as possible, for a nicer look and better in-case airflow. Use zip ties to clean up loose ends, especially where the fans are located. It is in this regard that a modular PSU makes all the difference – only connect what is needed and the rest can be left in the box, instead of having to zip tie it all together and tuck the bundle out of the way as much as possible... Even so – with careful planning, a non-modular PSU can still be routed efficiently for good air-flow.

You should have already connected the CPU 4-pin (or 8-pin) connector, so next install the 24-pin ATX motherboard power connector, the DVD drive, the hard drive, the graphics card, and anything else in your specific system that needs a power cable.

Note from Artellos (Olrik): As you might see, I made a little mistake here. I didn't install the second RAM module in the other Yellow slot. This way the RAM doesn't run in Dual-Channel configuration. I should have placed the second one in the other yellow slot.

The final connections to be made are the case connectors to the motherboard. These are for the power and reset button, power and HDD light, and USB and other data connectors for the ports on the front of the case. As every case and motherboard is different, you'll need to carefully follow the instructions in the motherboard manual. Every manual should have wiring diagrams in detail. You may find it under the heading “Front Panel Connectors” or F_PANEL.

4. The Result

And there you have it. Everything should now be complete, and ready for installation of the operating system. In the photo below, we can see the system in all its glory, although a few more zip-ties to minimise the bunch of black cables from the PSU into a smaller bundle would be nice. Nonetheless, for a first-time build, this Tech Apprentice received top marks! (Well, the system worked, so that's good!)

The job complete!

All thats left to do is close the case side panels, to protect the important components inside, and to create the proper environment for in-case airflow – to keep all the components nice and cool.
If you are installing an OEM version of Windows, you need to put the COA sticker on the case

Vista - Changing the Boot Screen

Navigate yourself to C:\Windows\system32\en-US for english; \NL-nl for Dutch and so on for each language available for Vista.

STEP TWO:
Find winload.exe.mui and open the Properties for this file.
Click on the 'Security' tab, now choose 'Advanced' and set the ownership of this file to 'Users'.

STEP THREE:
Now you need to copy and paste your desired background and replace it with the background from the folder 'system32\en-US folder'

STEP FOUR:
Now, goto 'Start > Run' and type 'msconfig'.

Right Click on your desktop and choose "New->Shortcut".

Step 2.

In the box that says "Type the location of the shortcut",
type in "shutdown -s -t 3600" with out the quotation marks
and click next.

Note: 3600 are the amount of seconds before your
computer shuts down. So, 60secs*60mins=3600secs.

Make up a name for the shortcut and you're done.

In the default installation of XP, the Messenger service runs by default. Messenger in windows2000/XP is similiar to the functionality of what "WinPopup" was to Win3.x/9X. However, having this service running will cause problems in the very near future, as ANYONE can send popup messages to your computer when you have this service running. (The service doesn't check where the message comes from).

Don't believe it? At the command prompt, type "net send IPADDRESS_OF_CLIENT_TO_SEND_TO Your Message" and that person will get a popup window immediately with "Your Message" .. the popup window will says "Messenger Service" in the titlebar and will contain your workstation's name and the time. You can send a message to yourself by typing "LOCALHOST" to test this.

Lost User Passwords. (Windows XP)

If you have lost or forgotten a user account password in Win XP, simply log in as the computer administrator, and go to control panel, user accounts. Here you will be able to reset the password for any of the systems user accounts.

Lost Administrator Password. (Windows XP)

Slightly more work needed if you lose or forget the Windows XP administrator password.

First reboot Windows XP in safe mode by re-starting the computer and pressing F8 repeated as the computer starts up. Then (in safe mode) click Start and then click Run. In the open box type "control userpasswords2" without the quotes - I have just used quotes to differentiate what you have to type.

You will now have access to all the user accounts, including the administrators account and will be able to reset the lost password.

Just click the administrators user account, and then click Reset Password.

You will need to add a new password in the New password and the Confirm new password boxes, and confirm by clicking OK.

All done, you have recovered the lost administrators password!

"network.http.max-persistant-connections-per-server".
Double-click each line and change the value to "8".

Step 8: Two lines up locate and double-click on "network.http.max-connections" and set the value to "48".

Step 9: Now right-click (control-click on a Mac) anywhere in the configuration (the area where you’ve been making the changes). Select "New" then "Integer".

Step 10: When prompted, copy and paste or type the following into the field provided: nglayout.initialpaint.delay.

Step 11: When prompted to add a value, enter the number "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

Step 12: Close all windows and tabs. The changes will take effect when you restart Firefox.

These changes allow Firefox to make multiple server connections and will speed up page downloads for better, more efficient use of your broadband connection. If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

Hacking Windows XP!
In case of a User's Password loss.

Boot the PC in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key when starting your computer.

Select the Safe Mode option. You can now Login as an Administrator and XP won't prompt for the Password.

Try rebooting the PC in DOS.

Now, Access to C:\Windows\system32\config\SAM.

Rename SAM as SAM.mj.

Now XP won't ask for Password next time you Login.

Now, again go to Start menu --> Run.

Type there cmd prompt.

Type net user

It will list all the users.

Again type net user "administrator" or the name of the administrator "name" *.

It will ask for the Password. Type the Password and there you are done.

Hold the Ctrl+Alt key and press Del twice. This will bring up the normal login and you can log on as Administrator. To unhide the Administrator account so it does show up.

Again go to Start --> Run --> regedit.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE --> SOFTWARE --> Microsoft --> Windows NT --> CurrentVersion --> Winlogon --> SpecialAccounts --> UserList.
Unhide the Administrator key by giving it a value of 1.

An introduction to the in-place editing feature

In-place editing means making the content available for editing just by clicking on it. We hover on the element, allow the user to click on the element, edit the content, and update the new content to our server.

clickToEditText: This is the text string that appears as the control tooltip upon mouse-hover.
rows: Using this option we specify how many rows to show to the user. By default it is set to 1. But if we pass more than 1 it would appear as a text area, or it will show a text box.
cols: Using this option we can set the number of columns we need to show to the user.
highlightColor: With this option we can set the background color of the element.
highlightendColor: Using this option we can bring in the use of effects. Specify which color should be set when the action ends.
loadingText: When this option is used, we can keep our users informed about what is happening on the page with text such as Loading or Processing Request.
loadTextURL: By using this option we can specify the URL at the server side to be contacted in order to load the initial value of the editor when it becomes active.

We also have some callback options to use along with in-place editing.

onComplete: On any successful completion of a request, this callback option enables us to call functions.
onFailure: Using this callback option on a request's failure, we can make a call to functions.
Callback: This option calls back functions to read values in the text box, or text area, before initiating a save or an update request.

We will be exploring all these options in our hands-on examples.

Code usage of the in-place editing features and options

Now things are simple from here on. Let's get started with code.

First, let's include all the required scripts for in-place editing:

Tips and tricks with in-place editing

Now that we have learned how to use in-place editing, we can take a look at some cheat codes. Here are some tips and tricks to get you on a fast track with using in-place editing.

Disabling the element for the in-place editing functionality

We may need to disable the in-place editing functionality of an element after a certain action in the application. In the real world (say a project management application), where to-do lists are shared, we can disable the functionality of certain items based on the user access roles. This is just a teaser; you can think of more. For now, let's quickly learn the art of disabling.

The functionality can be disabled on the fly.

Element.dispose();

Now, let's try this with the myDIV element created above. To disable it, add this line of code:

myDiv.dispose();

Disabling the editing functionality certainly comes in handy and can be called after a particular event, or as a callback.

Entering into the edit mode

Now that we have disabled the element, chances are that we may also need to bring back the sanity and make the element editable. Again, making an element editable is as simple as disabling it.

The element can be made editable with a brute force method.

Element.enterEnterMode();

We need to invoke the element ID with the enterEnterMode() function. To make the myDiv element editable, we need to add this line of code:

myDiv.enterEnterMode();

We can make certain functionality on an application editable only to the administrator, and not to the general users. We can disable in-place editing for general users and allow the admin to do in-place editing.

Submitting on Blur

There may be a lot of places where we don't want to show the user okButton or cancelLink along with our text box or field.

The following code shows the constructor definition for submitting the data on Blur.

The resulting user interface is shown in the following screenshot:

A simple example is the Gtalk status message. We can add our own title and the messenger updates it at runtime, without showing the user the Submit and Cancel buttons.

There are lots of uses of this particular option. It's not a good practice to present the user with the Submit and Cancel buttons every time, mainly, from the user interface perspective. So the next time you plan to show the user a Submit button, think about the submitOnBlur option.

Callbacks for onEnterEditMode and onLeaveEditMode

We can customize callbacks based on the behavior of the user while using applications. We can create callbacks when a particular element is made editable, or when a particular element leaves the edit mode.

These callbacks can be very useful and powerful in keeping the user informed, and also while changing the behavior of the application based on user inputs.

Invoking the callbacks is pretty neat and simple. Don't believe it? Check this code.

onEnterEditMode:f1(),

onLeaveEditMode: f2();

These options will come with the callback functions in the constructor definition. The complete code snippet will look like this:

In the code snippet, the f1() and f2()functions will be invoked once the element becomes editable and when it leaves the edit mode, respectively.

Hands-on example: In-place editing with server-side handling

In the previous section, we saw different uses for the client-side options. In this section we will be working with the server-side processing.

Most of our web applications are database-driven. When the user edits and submits the data, we need to update the database with the new content. Server-side handling comes into the picture here.

Let's go straight into making an in-place editing module. We are not going to write the module from scratch, but we will be extending the above example. In the story so far, we have added a simple

element to the page, initiated the InPlaceEditor constructor, and added a few options to it. We have clubbed together the above pieces of code and the complete code is given here:

Let's look closely into the constructor definition.

Here, we have given a proxy URL in the option. We now need to create a script at the server side to handle the request sent through this constructor. Let's name it readValue.php.

That's it! It takes just these two lines to read the value. This is because, by default, it uses REQUEST to send the value. We can also overwrite it by passing our own ajaxOptions. We can also replace $_REQUEST with $_POST and it will still work.

Try it out to believe me. Just replace the URL with readValue.php. The new definition of the constructor now looks like this:

We were able to read the value at the server-side script. We can do a lot of things with the value such as edit it, add it to a database, or print it back.

Hands-on example: InPlaceCollectionEditor

We have covered the InPlaceEditor up to now. There is one more nice feature we need to learn while we are at in-place editing—InPlaceCollectionEditor.

After clicking on the editable element, the user sees a text box or a text area. In some cases, we need to provide the user with fixed values, which they will have to choose between.

A simple example can be—being asked what your favorite programming language is. Instead of entering any value, you would be prompted with fixed values in a drop-down menu.

Firstly, we have to define the element to initiate the InPlaceCollectionEditor constructor.

If you look closely at the code snippet, the syntax is similar to the InPlaceEditorsyntax. The only major difference is the new option—collection. The collection option takes multiple values in the form of an array and prompts them in a drop-down menu for the user. We can use the above server-side code as it is.

Leave this as a part of a hands-on exercise, and try it out! In the following screenshot, check out how it should behave when you convert InPlaceEditor to InPlaceCollectionEditor:

In short, InPlaceCollectionEditor is an extension to InPlaceEditor providing the user with a set of fixed, predefined values. These values are shown in the form of a drop-down menu.

Slider for Dynamic Applications using script.aculo.us

Handling, processing, and representing data in the 2.0 era of web applications has become so crucial that designers and programmers are working towards new ways of improving the user interface experience. Slider is one such killer concept, using which the user can represent and handle data easily. In this two-part article series we will explore different types of Sliders and code usage and options with a hands-on example with vertical and horizontal slider.

Before we start exploring the slider, let me try to give you a complete picture of its functionality with a simple example.

Google Finance uses a horizontal slider, showing the price at a given day, month, and year. Although this particular module is built in Flash, we can build a similar module using the script.aculo.us slider too. To understand the concept and how it works, look at the following screenshot:

Now that we have a clear understanding of what the slider is and how it appears in UI, let's get started!

First steps with slider

As just explained, a slider can handle a single value or a set of values. It's important to understand at this point of time that unlike other features of script.aculo.us, a slider is used in very niche applications for a specific functionality.

The slider is not just mere functionality, but is the behavior of the users and the application.

A typical constructor syntax definition for the slider is shown as follows:

new Control.Slider(handle, track [ , options ] );

Track mostly represents the

element. Handle represents the element inside the track and, as usual, a large number of options for us to fully customize our slider.

For now, we will focus on understanding the concepts and fundamentals of the slider. We will surely have fun playing with code in our Code usage for the slider section.

Parameters for the slider definition

In this section we will look at the parameters required to define the slider constructor:

track in a slider represents a range
handle in a slider represents the sliding along the track, that is, within a particular range and holding the current value
options in a slider are provided to fully customize our slider's look and feel as well as functionality

It's time to put the theory into action. We need the appropriate markup for working with the slider. We have

for the track and one

for each handle. The resulting code should look like the snippet shown as follows:

It is possible to have multiple handles inside a single track. The following code snippet is a simple example:

Options with the slider

Like all the wonderful features of script.aculo.us, the slider too comes with a large number of options that allow us to create multiple behaviours for the slider. They are:

Axis: This defines the orientation of the slider. The direction of movement could be horizontal or vertical. By default it is horizontal.
Increment: This defines the relation between value and pixels.
Maximum: This is the maximum value set for the slider to move to. While using a vertical slider from top-to-bottom, the bottom most value will be the maximum. And for a horizontal slider from left-to-right, the right most value will be the maximum value.
Minimum: This is the minimum value set for the slider to move to. While using a vertical slider from top-to-bottom, the top most value will be the minimum. And for a horizontal slider from left-to-right, the left most value will be the minimum value approach for horizontal slider.
Range: This is the fixed bandwidth allowed for the values. Define the minimum and maximum values.
Values: Instead of a range, pass a set of values as an array.
SliderValue: This sets the initial value of the slider. If not set, will take the extreme value of the slide as the default value.
Disabled: As the name suggests, this disables the slider functionality.

Some of the functions offered by the slider are:

setValue:This will set the value of the slider directly and move it to the value position.
setDisabled: This defines that the slider is disabled at runtime.
setEnabled: This can enable the slider at runtime.

Some of the callbacks supported by the slider are:

onSlide: This is initiated on every slide movement. The called function would get the current slider value as parameter
onChange: Whenever the value of the slider is changed, the called function is invoked. The value can change due to the slider movement or by passing the setValue function.

Types of slider

script.aculo.us provides us the flexibility and comfort of two different orientations for the slider:

Vertical slider
Horizontal slider

Vertical slider

When the axis orientation of a slider is defined as vertical, the slider becomes and acts as a vertical slider.

Horizontal slider

When the axis orientation of a slider is defined as horizontal, the slider becomes and acts as a horizontal slider.

So let's get our hands dirty with code and start defining the constructors for horizontal and vertical slider with options. Trust me this will be fun.

Code usage for the slider

As a developer, I am sure you must have got a little bored reading only explanation. But hey hang on, we are getting into code!

Let's start with our HTML code and then the basic constructor definition of the slider.

The HTML code snippet is shown as follows:

Good. So let's define the constructor for the slider here:

That's it! No, wait. We are missing something. Although the code is perfect, when we fire it up in the browser we can't see anything. That's because we need to style it.

That's the most basic slider we created. And I am sure you are not content with that. We need to explore more.

Code usage for the vertical slider

Moving on, we will now create a vertical slider and add some options to enhance our slider feature.

Most of the code remains from the above example. We will focus on the required changes to be made in the above code.

As mentioned in the explanation above, we need to define the axis orientation as vertical in our options to make a slider vertical.

So, the new constructor looks like the snippet shown as follows:

Code usage for the horizontal slider

We have seen how to create a vertical slider. We want you to have a wild guess of how to make a horizontal slider. Let me give you two hints:

We don't have to struggle to make a slider horizontal. It's the default axis option.
We can make a horizontal slider by passing the horizontal option to axis.

Which one would you prefer?

I am not going to give you code for this one though. But yes, I will give you approaches for doing the same.

We have already created one horizontal slider in the Code usage for the horizontal slider section. That was one approach. Now try changing the axis option to horizontal in the above code for the vertical slider.

You may also need to change some CSS properties for height and width, and I am sure you would love doing them. It's so much fun! After you make changes to the height and width parameters of the CSS properties, the screenshot of slider should look like the following:

But wait, we need the slider to suit our applications, right? So let's customize our slider with options.

We have mentioned earlier that track is the range of values. So let's first define the range for our slider.

The range option uses the Prototypes' objectRange instance. Hence, we declare it using

Everything looks neat until here. Let's add some more options to our constructor, onSlide().

Using the onSlide() callback every time, we drag the slider and the callback is invoked. The default parameter passed to onSlide() is the current slider value.

We have added a div called value1 in our HTML code. On dragging the slider, we will update the value1 with the current slider value.

Impressed? And, we are not done yet. Let's add more options to the slider now.

You may ask me, what if the slider in the application needs to be at a particular value by default? And I will say use the sliderValue option. Let's make our slider value 10 by default. Here is the snippet for the same:

Tips and tricks with the slider

After covering all the aspects of the slider feature, here is a list of simple tips and tricks which we can make use of in our applications with ease.

Reading the current value of the slider

script.aculo.us "genie" provides us with two callbacks for the slider to read the current value of the slider. They are:

onSlide
onChange

Both these callbacks are used as a part of options in the slider.

onSlide contains the current sliding value while the drag is on. The callback syntax is shown as follows:

onSlide: function(value) {

// do something with the value while sliding. Write or Edit the

value //of current slider value while sliding

}

onChange callback will contain the value of the slider while the sliding or the drag event ends. After the drag is completed and if the value of the slider has changed then the onChange function will be called. For example, if the slider's current value is set to 10 and after sliding we change it to 15, then the onChange callback will be fired. The callback syntax is shown as follows:

onChange: function(value){

// do anything with the "changed" and current value

}

Multiple handles in the slider

Now, a thought comes to our mind at this point: Is it possible for us to have two handles in one track?

And, the mighty script.aculo.us library says yes!

Disabling the slider

We can disable our slider element using the option: disabled. We need to pass true to set the element in the disabled state. By default the value is set to false.

Our constructor definition would look like the code snippet shown as follows:

The disabled option will initially make the element's state disabled, and we can change this state using setDisabled.

Enabling the slider

As we can disable our slider element using the disabled option, we can also enable the element using the same option by passing the value as false.

By default the value of the disabled option is false. The elements are enabled, and we can change the state using setEnabled.

Hands-on example with vertical and horizontal slider

Now that we have worked with vertical and horizontal slider, wouldn't it be a great idea to see both types of the slider on the same page? Yes indeed.

Let's get started.

At a very basic level, we can change the axis option of slider and we can get either the horizontal or vertical slider.

So now we will have two slider types on one page, and the only difference is in the axis orientation.

We need to create two tracks and the respective handles for the slider

s. The HTML part of the code is given as follows:

Before that, let's add two divs, which will help us view the current values using the onChange and onSlide callbacks.

Let's take a closer look at the above code and see what is happening.

We have defined range, values, and sliderValue options for the slider. We have also added two callbacks onChange and onSlide. As I mentioned earlier, these callbacks get the current value of the slider as a parameter.

Hence, we are reading values from both the callbacks and updating the divs' sliding and changed when the event occurs.

Also, since we did not exclusively mention the axis definition, the default is horizontal.

So, the application now looks like the following screenshot:

Remember, the values will only be updated if we move the horizontal slider. And, nothing happens if we slide through the vertical slider. We have not yet defined the functionality for the vertical slider. Let's do it now.

The code for the vertical slider will also remain mostly similar with only difference of axis orientation.
